Why Play Isn’t “Just Play”
I often hear this from parents: “It just looks like my child is playing.” I get it. From the outside, that’s exactly what it looks like. But inside that playroom, there’s so much more happening.
Kids don’t always have the words to explain what’s going on inside. Honestly, most of the time, they don’t even know yet. Play gives them a way to show us, rather than telling us. It’s their language. Through toys, games, art, and pretending, they work through feelings they might not be able to name.
In my office, I’ve seen kids act out stories, build entire worlds with blocks, or draw pictures that explain more than words ever could. And while it may seem simple, their brains are working hard while they play.
Play actually activates the areas of the brain that help kids regulate emotions, solve problems, and learn. It helps them release feelings, calm their bodies, and practice coping skills, all in a way that feels safe and natural.
Every session looks different. One child might use dolls to make sense of changes at home. Another might choose painting or sensory toys to manage anxiety. Sometimes we play a game to work on teamwork and communication. It’s never “just play.” It’s real, meaningful work happening at a child’s pace.
Parents often expect therapy to be a lot of talking. But for most kids, talking isn’t the easiest way to process things. Play therapy meets them right where they are. It allows them to express what they can’t always explain.
I also tell parents not to worry if their child doesn’t want to share much about sessions. That’s normal. Kids open up when they feel ready. Instead, we work together on small tools and strategies you can support at home, so therapy continues beyond the session.
Kids today are dealing with a lot of school, friendships, technology, and the constant pressure to keep up. It’s a lot. Play therapy provides them with a space to breathe. It’s a safe place where they can figure things out, build confidence, and develop skills they’ll carry with them for life.
At Inner Healing Therapy, I’ve seen how powerful play can be. Over time, I’ve watched quiet, withdrawn kids leave sessions more confident and open. I’ve seen anxious kids learn to manage their worries and frustrated kids find healthy ways to express themselves. Play therapy lets them grow without forcing them to talk before they’re ready.
