Faith & Spirituality in Healing

Since emerging into the study of this field and practice, I have understood healing mostly through a psychological lens.
As someone who has studied psychology and is now pursuing social work, I am comfortable saying that I have spent years learning about mental health and the way our thoughts, emotions, and experiences shape who we are as individuals. Over time, however, I began realizing that healing is not only emotional or mental. For many of us, it is also spiritual.
My faith journey means the world to me. It began in May 2023 during a brief trip to Barcelona, Spain. This was the city where the mustard seed-sized faith was planted within me. I did not fully understand it at the time, but I knew something in me began shifting, and I was more than okay with it. Later, in August 2024, I made the decision to fully surrender my life to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at my home church. Since then, my relationship with Him and the Trinity has continued to grow, and it has become a central part of how I live and make decisions.
Today, I truly cannot imagine navigating life without Him. So, what role does faith play in healing?
From my Christian perspective, healing is far more than just managing symptoms or improving habits. It is about restoration. It is about bringing our whole selves, including our pain, our past, our fears, and our struggles, before God and allowing Him to meet us where we are, just as we are. Scripture reminds us of this invitation in the book of Matthew 11:28:“Come to me, all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
To me, this verse is a reminder that I never have to carry everything on my own, even if it is a situation I unintentionally got myself into. In my personal journey, faith in Christ has created space for honesty and humbling surrender.
It has also allowed me to slow down and become more aware of what is happening around me and internally, including anxious thoughts, feelings of being overwhelmed, and the parts of me that still need healing. At the same time, I have learned that I am not alone in these moments. There is comfort in knowing that I can bring absolutely everything to God, not just the perfect parts of my life, but the messy and difficult parts as well.
From an inner healing perspective, many of our struggles are rooted in earlier experiences, beliefs we have formed, and ways we learned to cope for protection. Faith does not erase these experiences, but it offers a new lens through which to understand them. It reminds us that we are not defined by our past or our hurt.
Therapy and faith are not opposing forces. In fact, the two work beautifully together. Therapy provides structure and insight, while faith provides hope and a deeper sense of connection to purpose. Together, they support a holistic approach to healing.
One of the most meaningful things I have learned in my journey is that healing is not only about becoming a better version of yourself. It is also about becoming more whole and allowing God into that process for even greater transformation. Whether you are strong in your faith, just beginning to explore it, or unsure where you stand, there is always space for you in the conversation.
Healing is a journey, and the good news is that you never have to walk it alone.
