Virtual vs. In-Person Therapy: Which One Is Right for You?
Therapy doesn't have to look the same for everyone. Some people prefer logging into a session from a space where they already feel comfortable, while others enjoy having an office to come to each week. Both virtual and in-person therapy give you the opportunity to build a relationship with your therapist, work toward your goals, and have dedicated time to focus on yourself.
At Inner Healing Therapy, we offer virtual therapy throughout Illinois and in-person therapy at our office in Aurora. Some of our therapists offer both options, while others specialize in providing virtual care.
So, what might help you decide?
What is virtual therapy actually like?
Virtual therapy allows you to meet with your therapist through a secure video appointment from a private space that works for you. For many people, being able to attend therapy from home makes it easier to fit sessions into everyday life.
It can be especially helpful when you're balancing work, school, parenting, or other responsibilities. There's no commute to plan around, and where you live in Illinois doesn't have to determine which therapist you can work with.
There can also be something really comfortable about doing therapy from your own space. You might have your favorite blanket, a cup of coffee, or even your pet next to you during your session. For some clients, being in a familiar environment actually makes it easier to settle in and talk openly.
Virtual therapy also gives clients throughout Illinois access to our therapists without needing to live near Aurora. If you connect with a therapist on our team who offers virtual sessions, distance doesn't have to get in the way of working together.
All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device for your session.
What about in-person therapy?
Some people simply enjoy coming into an office for therapy. It gives you a physical space away from your usual routine where you can sit down with your therapist and focus on what's going on in your life.
In-person sessions also allow you and your therapist to interact face-to-face in the same room, which may be something you personally prefer.
For children, being in the office can give therapists additional ways to engage during sessions. Therapy doesn't always have to mean sitting on a couch and talking about feelings. Depending on the child and their needs, sessions may include games, art, activities, toys, or play.
That doesn't mean virtual therapy can't work for kids and teens. Some young clients really enjoy virtual sessions, particularly when they're comfortable with technology or have busy school and activity schedules. What works best depends on the individual client rather than their age alone.
It's really about what works for you
There isn't a “better” version of therapy between the two.
You might love the convenience and comfort of virtual therapy. You might look forward to coming into the office every week. You might even use both at different points depending on your therapist's availability and what is happening in your life.
What's more important is finding a therapist you connect with and a format that allows you to consistently make space for therapy.
